Funny, Hairbrained Ideas for Beauty and Hair Salon Names

Delilah's Hair Salon - Sampson's Hair

Samson and Delilah by Cranach the Younger. Samson's cool armor couldn't protect him from Delilah's scissors.

Silly is always best.

Fanciful and attention getting names are apparently mandatory for hair and nail salons. Where Do these company names come from?

Naming your salon is serious business, but you can tell that salon names are not always to be taken seriously. People fearlessly and intentionally walk into businesses called: The Clip Joint, Bushwhackers, and Headhunters without a second thought.

Alliterative appellations also abound, and spelling liberties are taken regularly. Ken's Kuts & Kolors wins the prize for using the most K's in one business.

There are also salons offering Klassy Kuts or Kuts 'n' Kurls. Other spelling woes plagued the namers of Hair Stranz and Hanz On Nail Designs, both of which are in Corona, CA or might that be Korona, KA?

My theory about this is the salon sign-makers have taken over some of the underused letters in our alphabet (like K and Z) and given them something to do.

Rhyming names are popular for such establishments, as well. Hair Affair, The Hair Lair, Great Lines Hair Designs, Nail Detail, Gail's Nails, and Dale's Nails, are a few examples.

Perhaps the frivolous and imaginative nomenclature is meant to convince us not to take our vanities too seriously, but wouldn't it be interesting if other businesses had similar naming strategies?

With the possible exception of some imbibing establishments, most enterprises don't do this.

Can you imagine imagine a financial institution calling itself Manny's Money Making Machine or The Kash Stash, or Fundz, Chekz and Loanz?

We might make assumptions about salons by their names. Acapella Salon probably does it's styling without instrumental musical accompaniment . The Hands Up Nail Boutique may have had it's name inspired by a recent robbery.

The Hairsmith salon sounds like they use hammers and anvils, which seems an unpleasant way to have your hair styled.

There is a College Green Hair Cutters. Do they cut only green hair? Do they also clip lawns?

Mille's Hair Mine probably opened in California's gold rush country some time after the gold mines stopped being productive, and people began mining hair instead.

For sheer puns you can get Shear Design, Shear Heaven, Shear Magic, Shear Creations, Shear Delight, Shears To You, Shear Brilliance, Shear Elegance, Blood Sweat & Shears, as well as Shear Madness . . . beauty . . . talent or even Shearly Beloved. I, personally, would tend to stay out of the one with blood and sweat.

Hair Etc. seems to be a popular name, but it leaves much to the imagination.

For those who like something a little more historical or traditional, there's Hairloom , or a number of Hairitage salons.

A French Impressionist captures the essense of styleing.
A French Impressionist captures the essense of styleing.

Up, Up and Away...

A lot of salons seem to think that having a French name is classy, or even Klassy.

Among them are, La Coiffure Salon, Le Nail Salon, Hair Nouveau, La Petite Salon, Le Mys Nails, and Hair Sebon.

The Harlow Jantee salon has a "Manicureste". If law firms did this they might come up with Le Trois Advoctes, or Le Ballet du Justice.

In one city you can choose between Hair Images, Hair Reflections, Hair Accents , Hair Attitudes, The Hair Shack or Foxxy's, perhaps depending upon the demeanor you are trying to project.

Some salons seem inspired by popular entertainment. For Your Nails Only sounds like a clandestine adventure. There's also The Last Tangle, but it's not in Paris, it's in Chico.

More than one shop has called itself Hollywood Nails (not in Hollywood, by the way) , Then there's the more Shakespearean, As You Like It Hair Studio.

A few hint at vanity on a higher plane like Angel Nails or Heaven On Earth. A New Creation Hair & Nails hints at rebirth while, Alpha & Omega Hairstyling Salon covers the subject completely.

You can get Heavenly Nails & Hair in a town which also has a shop for extreme nail emergencies, 911 Nails. Then there's Hair We Are, and if you're not sure where that is, this one is in Cotati, CA .

First Lady Nails.. seems like they have limited their clientele as much as Holiday Nails has limited it's seasons. Hair Cut 2000 may have changed their name by now or else their calendar is a little slow.

As you can see, puns, alliteration, questionable rhyme and pure silliness are used with reckless abandon by many salons.

Prime Cuts, Upper Cuts, Just Cut Loose, The Final Cut, and A Cut Above attract attention along with Hair Apparent, Hair and Beyond, Hair Raisers, Hair To Please You, and Hair To Stay are apparently here to stay.

The Best Little Hairhouse in (whatever state) might make you do a double take. There's even a Hairhouse Warehouse for beauty supplies.

Hair Today, Bangs For The Memories, Mane Event, All Tressed up, Hair to Please. The Bobshed, Scissorhands, Headmistresses, Tre'ss Bien (another French corruption) Cut and Caboodle, all of these compete for silliness with Headquarters, Heads Up, Just Teasin, The Pomp Room, Clippety-Do-Dah, Comb as You Are and All Tressed Up,

Hairborn, Hairport, American Hair Lines and American Hair Force,-- all sound aeronautic, perhaps they are located at airline terminals.

Speaking of terminal, there's To Dye For, Dye Hard, Hair to Eternity and Permanent Solutions. My favorite along those lines is Curl up and Dye.The one I happened to see with that evocative name, was located near a retirement community -- and yes, the residents were using their services.

LOL, we have some of those, too.Hair Trends Studio, Heads Up Hair DEsign, Kidz Kuts and Kutz & Such, Nu Locks, Nu Look Beauty Salon, Suntanz Tanning, Hair, Nails & Tattoo, Skilz Unlimited, Shear Brilliance, Shear Magic, To Dye For Hair and Nail Spa are a few in the yellow pages.

That's nothing. I should write a hub on naming horses: Sweetheart on Parade, Thunder's Spotted Bull, Spatter Butt, Hih Lite's Hallelujah Cody, Dash for Cash, etc.

Rochelle Frank 3 years ago

Do it, Donna! And expalin it if you can-- I know that a lot of race hore nanes come from combining the dam and sire (mommy and daddy-- not sure if that is the correct terminology).

Thanks for commenting.

Zsuzsy Bee 3 years ago

Rochelle! what a fun hub... We have "Head Hunters", "Noggins", the next town over also has a "Best little hairhouse". I just love these play on word names for businesses... I named my tailor-shops 'Sew its seams'...

I loved the hub regards Zsuzsy

Rochelle Frank 3 years ago

Now that would work---so it seems. I got to thinking about utility companies, dental clinics, car repair shops, home improvement stores and funeral homes.-- everybody should lighten up, don't you think?

Lexica 3 years ago

Hi Rochelle, I've long suspected that half the world's creative potential goes into naming hair salons and you've just confirmed the fact for me! Please note that this is an international phenonemon - the names in Europe are equally "hair-raising."

2patricias 3 years ago

There's a hairdressers about 10 miles from us (south coast of England) called 'Hair Flicks'. The name should raise a smile from Brits of a certain age, but younger ones will be mystified!

IN another nearby town there is 'Barber Blacksheep's' (say it aloud).

byee 3 years ago

Awesome hub. I love seeing funny signs and business names!!

funnebone 3 years ago

can you imagine my dissapointment when I made a hazordous you turn to pull into " bangs for a bucK"!

Rochelle Frank 3 years ago

Sounds lke a bargain, no matter what.

Constant Walker 3 years ago

"Hair Today..." would probably be a bad name, eh?

Rochelle Frank 3 years ago

Excellent! Much better than a lot of them.

desert blondie 3 years ago

Glad I found this one...never thought to compare names of hair salons with banks or law firms...but have never personally chosen to have my hair cared for at an establishment with a 'cute' name. Connection? Who knows...maybe I'm just a cautious sort when it comes to my hair.

Rochelle Frank 3 years ago

Blondes have more fun?

I used to be a blonde,...Naturally as a kid, and less naturally as a teen. Then I decided to let nature take its course and became a brownette. Now that a little grey is seeping in. i'm considering blonde again-- probably will do what seems easiest.

spryte 3 years ago

LOL! Great hub and yes it does work for the HubMob!

My sister is a hairdresser (on the side now) and she used to work for a place whose name made me cringe. It was called "Hair on the Hill."

Rochelle Frank 3 years ago

Maybe that's true in some places, Research Analyst--(I see squirrels on every corner-- but I'm not in a city). Might be because it is often a woman who opens this kind of business-- and for starting a small business it is one that doesn't need a lot of start-up capital, compared to others.

Benson Yeung 3 years ago

reading is fun because of hubs like these.

gwendymom 3 years ago

Great Hub, again! I loved the Bushwackers one. I wonder how many customers they actually have. I don't think I could walk in there lokking for a haircut, I might if I needed a bikini waxing.

Rochelle Frank 3 years ago

Thanks Benson and Gwendymom--

This hub is not one of my personal favorites, but it has by far and away the most views of any I have written -- especially by sources outside of HubPages-- don't really know why. Must be high on some search.

KCC Big Country 3 years ago

Great Hub! We have some of those too, but we also have "Just Cuttin'", "Cuttin' Up", "The Cutting Edge", "The Wild Hair", "The Cuttery", "Hair Masters", and "Hair We Are".

Rochelle Frank 3 years ago

Thanks-- this is my highest hub in visits-- but I really don't know why, probably some other sites picked it up. It was fun, but not my best in my own opinion.

Thanks for commenting-- I appreciate every visit. And I love what I have read of yours.

RGraf 3 years ago

There are some unique names out there. I've always thought of how funny they were and who could come up with these.

Lori 3 years ago

Looking for a name for a shop I will be opening in my house. We live on a corner, and I will be having a Coastal theme in the shop, however I do not live on the coast. I was trying to use words that relate to the coast and hair for an excample Waves of the hair and waves of the ocean. HELP!

Rochelle Frank 3 years ago

Interesting concept. Don't know if I can help... Ocean waves.... Shore to please Styles ...

SurfStyles...? I'm sure yu will find something perfect. Anyone else have suggestions?

Lori 3 years ago

Thanks for replying!

I do wish to add I wish to have incorporated into the name somewhere, "Corner"

Like Corner Shades & Waves However I think it sounds like I'm selling sunglasses on a corner in the shade. Ha Ha Ha. This is why I am asking for Help.

Corner Cuts, Shades & Waves ???? Too long

Lori 3 years ago

Okay, I came up with a name that is shorter and catchy as well. I orignally wanted something to link up with Beach Theme like " Waves in the hair and waves at the beach" However... I wanted something with the word corner in it too because I live on a corner. So sometimes simple is best I've decided on

Cutting Corners and placing this with a pair of sissors opened up to make it look like 4 corners!

I can still have the Salon in a coastal theme. People will see it soon enough. However when I make my price list for the people I will make the words come alive.

Thanks for the help

Rochelle Frank 3 years ago

Good luck in your business!

ReuVera 3 years ago

Haha, nice! My sister-in-law used to have a beauty shop called "Hair and Company". Also there's in town "Cool Noggings", "Mere Image".

LondonGirl 3 years ago

Great hub! "A cut above" is depressingly common here, and I've come across a hairdresser's called "Hair today..."

Rochelle Frank 3 years ago

ReuVera-- Mere Image is kind of cool, because it IS all about the image.

Londongirl-- "Hair Today" really does make you wonder if they will be around tomorrow.

newsworthy 3 years ago

as somene said earlier this is a fun hub. just what i needed - to let my hair down! im going see if i can get some bed hair. my hair looks like fun hub hair but it sure is work!

Lori 3 years ago

I have quite a few things for sale before my big move. One thing that I have for sale is an Eugene LTD Perming Machine and matching Dryer from the 1900's, would anyone know what this would be valued at or anyone have any idea's on what I should sell it for??? This isn't something I can keep as for I will not have the room for it. (I hope no one will buy it thinking there going to use the thing)! Ha Ha Ha I know things make come backs, but God I hope our jobs get easier not harder.

Thanks Lori

Christoph Reilly 3 years ago

Very funny! I don't think I have any funny name salons in my town. I feel left out. I tried to come up with some, but it seems as though they are all actually taken. How about wig shops? "Flip your Wig," or "You Grow Em, We Sew Em!" Nah.

Anyway, great hub. Sorry I missed it first time around. I've got lots of catching up to do!

Rochelle Frank 3 years ago

Thanks, Christoph.

This one has been posted for quite awhile-- and though I don't think it is my best , it has been ( far and away ) the most viewed  each day -- must be linked somewhere.

It's still a mystery to me why it continues to get 30 to 50 views a day, while others are lucky to get one.

JamaGenee 3 years ago

Just had to throw these in:

Hair Maintenance (except in their TV ad, the H is obliterated with some sort of graphic, so all you see is "Air Maintenance". Meaning when the stylists that come on next talk about the services offered, you aren't sure if. it's a hair salon or a heating/AC company)

Hair Razors

Eclipz Studio

Jagged Edge

Mane Thing Salon & Spa

Not So Plain Jane's

The Snippery

Running With Scissors (?????????)

Tips 2 Toes

Twirl-A-Kurl

And no pun intended, one that cuts right to the chase: You're SO Vain (caps theirs, not mine)

As for why people keep finding this hub - who cares?  A page view is a page view, whether you consider it one of your best or not. ;)

Rochelle Frank 3 years ago

Thanks, JamaGenee !

I would be afraid of "Running with Scissors"-- we were always told not to. My haircutter uses a razor, but doesn't run.

I agree about the views-- but seems very wierd that it has almost 3000-- and the next highest has 600-- then 500-- and steep decline from there. As you say, who looks at numbers?

Lori 3 years ago

The Jaggered Edge, The Hair World, Larry Moe and Curly Doo's, The Curly Q Studio, Shades & Waves, The Country Clipper, All the Trimming's

I loved the hub. My mom is a retired hair dresser, she was a beautician for over 40 years, I can't wait to show her this hub. Back when she was a beautician the biggest names were just plain like Cut and Curl, everything sure has changed. When I lived in New York, I used to go to the "Mane Attraction."

Rochelle Frank 3 years ago

This hub has been farrrr and awayyyy my most sucessful in numbers. Even though I think I have a lot that are better.

Hair is a major subject. you might want to try it .

Thanks for looking in.

baby mama 3 years ago

my good friend i went to cosmo school with bought a salon its been there as long as we can remember but the lady before named it mi salon! we are not sure if my salon was taken!lol any ideas?

Rochelle Frank 3 years ago

Maybe French? or another language? Do you knw the nationality derivation of the previous owners?

baby mama 3 years ago

100% pure bred american red neck older woman! she just wants a new name for the new look! i dont blame her people get confused about the name but my friend is an aries so its gotta be fun and catchy!

Rochelle Frank 3 years ago

Good luck. Let us know what you come up with.

Mighty Mom 3 years ago

Getting one's hair coiffed should not be a hair-raising experience. I personally would worry about the capabilities of the stylists (not to mention the mental acuity of the salon owner) in many of these establishments. Call me a snob, but if it's got alliteration using "k's" I'm keeping my kurls out of their klutches for sure!

A similar phenom seems to be occurring with spas these days. Spas are proliferating in my town (which means they must be proliferating elsewhere) like Starbucks in the 1990s. Seems there's on on every korner. Oops -- spas don't go for that.

Fun hub, Rochelle.

For the record, I used to get my hair done at Laura duPriest (the salon owner's name), then Encore Hair Designs, then Paula V's (again, owner's name) until Paula moved over to Bloom Salon...

My nail salon has changed names so long I no longer change the entry in my cell phone:-). MM

Always nice to have a chuckle, even at the perceived mighty names that people may have come up with, perhaps that was the view of their 'kingdoms' and some make more sense at the time of making them up and later on down the line.

magnoliazz 2 years ago

Nice hub! LOL...have you ever considered thinking about the local taverns and if they followed the salon naming game?

How about the Drink & Wink, Or What Ales You, Sip N Sin, or maybe, Sit & Spin? Swill Your Fill, The Whinery...oh boy...I will be thinking about this all day now. It will be driving me nuts! LOL!!

Rochelle Frank 2 years ago

There us to be a drinking establishment, in the town where I grew up, called "The Office".

Men could call their wives and say they were still at the office, or had to stay awhile at the office , etc.

fastfreta 2 years ago

This is one of the cutest hubs I've seen. I'm going to bookmark it to use for conversation in some of my "old girl pajama parties." I'm looking forward to reading more of your hubs soon.

Rochelle Frank 2 years ago

It is an early one -- and has (BY FAR) the most total views of any of my hubs. In fact out of my 109 hubs-- this one has about 1/3 of my total hub views.

With several thousands of visits, I can only surmise that I accidentally tossed in some good SEO keywords. My theory is that all hair stylists long to own their own salon. When they have downtime, they get on the computer and search for names.

Thanks for your comment.

samboiam 2 years ago

Rochelle Frank, you are so funny. I am definately a fan.

Rochelle Frank 2 years ago

Thank you, samboiam. It's not all me-- the salon-namers are certainly funny.

Intend to open my own with First Impression as a name. Is that one cool.

Rochelle Frank 2 years ago

That one actually sounds like a great salon name. Creative and sensible... And something everyone wants. Good luck!

Christine 2 years ago

Hey there --- these are great. I'm opening a salon in an old victorian building. The rooms remind me of the old beauty parlors from 50 years ago. Lots of character, very cozy and sunny and I'm looking for a name that goes along with this. I thought of "The Parlor"....but I'm wondering if anyone else has any ideas????

Rochelle Frank 2 years ago

That might be perfect, Christine. It has to be something you like. Good luck with your new business. Hope it does well.

I have a salon that is named SOS Hair Salon

Terre 23 months ago

I'm a hairstylist who was out of the cosmo loop for quite awhile and now going back into the profession again. Almost 25 years ago I owned my own salon (twice) in Kansas. I moved there from Florida...(big mistake!!) anyway, I called my salons the "Comb-a-cabana" club and had it decked out like the Copacabana in Bogart's movie. I had tropical plants everywhere, an old piano in the corner, wore tropical attire and served non-alcoholic coctails. It turned out horrible! Those people didn't get it at all and I kept getting calls from old farmers wanting to know if my salon was a new beer joint! The old women in town - well, you can probably guess. They were so stuck in the past!! But I always loved calling my salons the "Comb-a-cabana"!!! If I open up another salon I'm sticking with it!!!!

Rochelle Frank 23 months ago

I think that's adorable.-- maybe just not the right place. It would probably do fine in Florida or California.

nteseng 22 months ago

I love your article. it is beautiful....I am opening a hair & beauty salon in a month and not sure what to name it. I loved celestial hair salon or B'yond Celestial hair salon...any ideas?

Rochelle Frank 22 months ago

I think the most important thing is that you are happy and comfortable with it. Good luck in your new business.

BRIAN SLATER 22 months ago

Rochelle great hub, when I was a small boy and used to go with my mum her salon was called "Patricks".

Rochelle Frank 22 months ago

What? No silly name? Did "Patricks" refer to an owner name? Thanks for reading.

Lorraine 22 months ago

I have just opened a salon in a beautiful "antiquey" small town in BC, Canada. The name of it now is Fort Hair Station (the name of the town is Fort Langley). This does not quite suite me, as I am extending the business to include, pedis, manis (with gels nails etc), lash extensions and waxing. So I am looking for a swanky name, Any ideas?

Rochelle Frank 22 months ago

Let your ideas simmer for awhile-- I'm sure that the "right one" will pop into your mind eventually. Good luck in your business. It's really hard work to do your own thing, but it can be very worthwhile.

Kricket 19 months ago

What about the kids salons? Noticed that they too have just as many corner names? Here we have Kidz LIdz, Candy Hair, Snippetty, Locks of Fun, Lollilocks, Cool Cuts for Kids, Hollywood Kids (and it's in Australia!) and more I am sure I haven't discovered yet. Some of these are trendy and should do well, but some kids salon names are just plain sad. Can we come up with some strong trendy kids salon names to show the world here??? May prevent more of these 'fluffy' named salons from opening!

Rochelle Frank 19 months ago

How about Kricket Klipz? Thanks for the comment. I didn't realize there were specialty shops for kids.

I hope to be opening a nail and waxing salon in the next few months and am having a hard time coming up with a name. It will be a bar themed salon. Some ideas are:

All Lacquered Up

Lacquered Up

Nails on the Rocks

Martinis and Manicures

Cocktails for Nails

I don't want to name it The Nail Bar as there are too many of those already. I was hoping to come up with something that tied the cocktail theme into the name. I would love to hear more suggestions!!! Thank you.

Rochelle Frank 15 months ago

I assume you are not serving actual cocktails-- so I think the last two might be misleading. Maybe something with "mixers", "happy hour", "lounge"? Hope you find what that works for you.

I hope this helps...but really watch long salon names!

Rochelle Frank 14 months ago

Naming your business is a very personal thing and I think it can make a difference. Long names can be hard to remember-- and sometimes hard to put on a sign.

chicafabulous 12 months ago

Thor 12 months ago

We have 2-3 depending on how you look at it of these names where I live. Scissorhands Salon, Mane Event/Main Event. I think the last 2 are owned by the same people just spelled differently.

Rochelle Frank 12 months ago

I wonder if 'Scissorhands' draws people in. I might not want to try that, but I guess the point is 'mainly' to attract attention.

Eaglekiwi 11 months ago

Too funny , some people sure have some humorous imaginations and some maybe thought up over a few drinkies, -Hair brain idea? haha

Ocassionally I have this name that often drops into my mind for a clothing label.

One day I will win the lottery and use it.

Amanda F 10 months ago

Hello!

Ok so I am looking for a creative/ funny name for my Day Spa and am at a complete loss, everyone I pick has already been used. If you have any ideas that would be great! I dont do hair which is why none of the above really work for me :(

Eaglekiwi 10 months ago

How about Spa Gaia...she was a Greek Goddess (Mother Earth)

Rolls off the tongue nicely. Also, a Greek inspired theme would work.

Rochelle Frank 10 months ago

Thanks for commenting, Amanda and Eaglekiwi. Naming your business is an important decision. You might get an ideas by looking up the names of similar businesses (in places not near you) and thinking about why one appeals to you and another one doesn't seem to work.

Your location might have an influence-- or you might want to create a sense of another location. For instance, if you are not near an ocean, you cold make your spa seem like a mini-vacation at on a tropical isle or a Mediterranean resort (like the Greek theme that was suggested).

The name might also affect your decor. Hope you come up with some good ideas.

Buster Bucks 9 months ago

I spotted my favorite name while in San Francisco about 15 years ago.

The hair salon was located on the second floor, and they had a sign pointing upward with their business name on it:

"We're Up Hair"

:-)

Buster

Rochelle Frank 9 months ago

That's actually pretty good. It's hard enough to attention for your business when you are on street level. That sign might get people to stop and think about climbing a flight of stairs.

Thanks for commenting.

I am looking for a name for our new hairdressers, were sisters so would like to incorporate this into the name - any ideas ?

Rochelle Frank 6 months ago

Maybe, "We Sisters" or "Sisters with Scissors"--- It will eventually have to come from the both of you. something you can agree on.

I actually think that using the idea of sisters in your name would be great-- because people will get to know you and remember the sister part.

I'm in no way an expert a salon naming-- but you might find some ideas here. Good luck.

Have had a barber shop for seven years that's under the old owners name. Shop was established in 1965. Time for a face lift and name change. So many other shops in the area. Have an older client base. Need to attract a younger base. Husband came up with a clever name with my initial but not sure if it will offend anyone. "L" of a Cut Barber Shop. Want something catchy and clever. Also a name to be proud of. Any feed back would be appreciated.

Changing my salon name need ideas. Our style is victorian sofas, purple walls, marilyn and audrey artwork and zebra stations. Thinking maybe one word, but open to all ideas. thanks

I'm opening a mobile spa business but stuck on a name. I've come up with Luxury Body & Wellness Spa. Any help with ideas traditional or trendy would be a Huge help.

To the woman who was opening a salon with her sister- we have a salon in town called two women doing hair. Could be two sisters doing hair.

i planing to open a nails shop in Malaysia~got any ideas?

stifler-- look through the ideas in the article and comments, then try doing some free association with some of the words. The best ideas for your salon come directly from you. Good luck.
